My Entrepreneurial Beginnings
When Way and I decided to dive into entrepreneurship, we were, let’s say, blissfully unaware of what we were getting ourselves into. We started our first business when the kids were still in that “Mom, Mom, Mom” phase, and I’m pretty sure my to-do list was longer than a Harry Potter novel.
Our business model? Oh, that was easy: underprice everything and throw in enough extras to make you wonder if we were running a bath shop or an all-inclusive resort. We sold handcrafted soaps but somehow convinced ourselves we needed to add bonus bath salts, lotions, and maybe a loofah or two—just to prove we were worth it. I half expected our customers to ask if we offered foot massages with every purchase, and honestly, we probably would have considered it.
And, of course, we had helpful advice from friends and family who were as qualified to give business advice as I am to perform open-heart surgery. “You should lower your prices,” they’d say. “Are you sure you want to do that?” Fantastic. Nothing says “great business strategy” like operating out of fear and discounting yourself into oblivion.
But somehow, through all the chaos and missteps, we grew the business. And then we did it again—built, grew, and even sold two businesses in the span of 10 years. The juggling act with little kids and big dreams wasn’t easy, and I’m still recovering from all the unnecessary complexity we added. But in the end, those tough lessons shaped how we approach business now: no more overcomplicating things and absolutely no more family business advice (unless they want to buy stock in our sanity fund).

Every Friday, you’ll receive a quick email from me (no, not my assistant or my kids—just me). Inside, I’ll ask you two important questions:

The total cost for the full year is $997. We also offer payment plans if you’d prefer to spread out the cost. This covers 52 weekly emails and my personal responses to each one.
